What is a good average distance to set top mounted brake levers apart on a cyclocross bike?
I am building a cyclocross bike and can't find a set of cyclocross handlebars. I am using a set of alloy road handlebars but the top mounted brake levers seem to be quite far apart. They are approximately 7.5" apart measuring from the center of one clamp to the center of the other. I can't move them any closer due to the taper for the stem. Is this ok or do I need to find another set of handlebars that would allow the brake levers to be moved closer together?
Hi there,
There isnt really such thing as a Cyclocross specific handlebar. And to be perfectly honest, and this answer is coming from decades of international cyclocross experience, top mounted brakes are not worth the weight or the cost. Cyclocross requires a fast pace in which the hoods or drops would be the best option, and on technical sections where you think you may need top mounted brakes, you get much better control with your hands on the drops where the levers are easily accesible. And as for the bars? I highley recomend PRO PLT bars, they come in black or ice grey, in sizes 40-44 and come in compact, anatomic and round. They retail for around 25-35 British pounds and if they are being used for cyclocross i also recomend the Oversize version for the same price.
